David Stern bringing out the big guns

Just when Gilbert Arenas may have been let off the hook he goes and does this. After the NBA found out that Arenas had firearms in the Wizards locker room, he played the following night in Philadelphia. The NBA let Arenas play while they tried to figure out if he should be suspended or not. In an action that Arenas thought would be funny, he pointed his fingers that looked like guns towards his teammates(pictured above).

Well Arenas, nobody thought that was funny at all, and David Stern thought it was a mockery of the situation. Immediately, Stern laid down the law, and suspended Arenas. Enjoy your suspension Mr. Arenas. He was notified of his indefinite suspension without pay Wednesday by Stern and here is Stern’s statement on the situation.

“Although it is clear that the actions of Mr. Arenas will ultimately result in a substantial suspension, and perhaps worse, his ongoing conduct has led me to conclude that he is not currently fit to take the court in an NBA game,” Stern said. “Accordingly, I am suspending Mr. Arenas indefinitely, without pay, effective immediately pending the completion of the investigation by the NBA.”

The question that I need to ask is why would Arenas even think about bringing guns to a locker room? What is the cause? Didn’t he think he wouldn’t get caught and suspended? I just don’t get it. The only reason he would bring guns is if he planned to used them, but on who? Who knows, maybe we’ll never find out. Until we do, Arenas will be removed from the NBA.

I believe this is the right call made by David Stern. Honestly, I think a greater stance needs to be taken with Arenas. This isn’t like the Plaxico Burress situation. Burress brought his gun to a nightclub and it accidently went off while in his pants pocket. He never exposed it to the public and it wasn’t in the boundaries of the NFL stadium. Burress received a two-year sentence for possessions of a firearm. While it’s not ok, it wasn’t in harm’s way of anyone else in the NFL.

Arenas brought his firearms to his locker, which is around his teammates and media personnel of the Washington Wizards. This is a hazard to everyone, not just Arenas, and he should be held accountable. What if one of the guns went off and injured or killed someone?  Arenas didn’t even think of the consequences. He should be removed from the NBA, which would set a huge example to all NBA players.

Roger Goodell has taken a hard stance on NFL players while as NFL commissioner. Goodell made examples of Pacman Jones and Plaxico Burress. It’s time for David Stern to do the same. Now is his chance.

Arenas thought it would be funny to mock the situation and he received a suspension. He can think over his stupidity while he is at home watching his team play. Hopefully it stays that way forever. Even if the suspension is over and Arenas can play in the NBA again, no one should sign him.

Believe me, you don’t want him on your team.
